What Your Dining Room Says About You

Modern:

modern-white-large-dining-table
You like clean lines AND clean sinks! “Okay seeeriously guys, the dishwasher is empty! Just put it in there!”
😉 Your space takes its use, but each chair and plate is then set right back where it needs to be before everyone can relax. Your home is something you take pride in, and your dining set definitely reflects that! You are a forward thinker who believes furniture can be both functional and sculptural. Plus come on, how ON EARTH could you allow clutter (i.e. anything of your husband’s) to sit on top of that gorgeous table for more than like 5 seconds?! That’s just a travesty. A furniture travesty (not punishable by death).  To you, every piece has its place, every coffee mug has its rightful spot, every centerpiece needs to be returned. You may be a minimalist. One who, in the end sets a high standard for themselves in life, hence the cleanliness thing. That is a very positive way to live, and your space reflects all of those values. (But seriously, put the cup in the dishwasher.)

Traditional:

traditional-dining-room
Family is everything to you! You may have an heirloom of a table with a scratch from Thanksgiving in 1989 when Uncle Dan dropped the mashed potato plate (how wasteful of our Idaho Potatoes). But you appreciate things like that because they add character. The heaviness of the wood and the hand carved features add about as much character as has each of your family members over the years (How many more wine stains until we get a tablecloth guys??) If it weren’t for your family, there’d be no reason to have a table to eat around, no loud arguing matches over a round of Monopoly, and nothing to gather around when you look into everyone’s eyes and tell them that they are what you’re thankful for—every year. The table and chairs you have reflects all of these beliefs that it’s not about perfection, because they are already perfect to you.

Mid-Century:

mid-century-expandable-dining-table-o
Your table is part functional, part art instillation. You appreciate the innovation (ironically, of the past). The Mid-Century style is a combination of modern and traditional. The wood aspect allows these pieces to be used hard, but the modern lines allow it to be appreciated when it’s not being eaten on (Haha okay but still Gwen, don’t spill on this thing…) You are a person who enjoys art and has high style, so this is the PERFECT table type for you! The vintage look is very on trend right now. You believe in progress, in yourself and in the world. You believe that traditional measures were important, but building toward the future is equally important (is importanter a word??) The Mid-Century style was one that exuded innovation, oddly enough you are that same way.

Rustic:

rustic-dining-room-sets-modern-rustic-dining-table-rpg-magazine-painting
Okay, the biggest reason that Rustic designs are amazing is that you can absolutely beat these things up and they hold on forever. Often the look is very chunky and stout (“What did you just call me!?) This style is meant to be used and used hard. It’s a great style for families or a bachelor with a hammer collection. It comes down to the details in this one, the chairs and centerpiece can make it more or less rustic. In the end, this style is versatile and that’s what you appreciate about it! You try to be the same way in your own life, able to take on so many challenges and changes with ease. You have a propensity toward usable items that can last forever because you see the value in quality. Wood tables in the rustic style are the absolute epitome of everlasting.

Glam:

glam-hollywoodchic-dining-room-fireplace-peacock-feathers-wallcovering-black-and-white-chairs
This is the first time we have spoken about this design style. Some know it as Hollywood Chic, but we prefer Glam because it’s a much shorter word to type, and writing this on an old laptop is annoying when it freezes every 5 minutes (Claiming a new laptop as a business expense in 3…2…1…) Okay so the glam style is raging right now. Its sparkly, bright, and reflective. Chairs are built for comfort and style. We would give this newbie style 10/10 because its attention-getting, just like you! You are proud of yourself, where you’ve come from and where you are going. The Glam style is slightly more feminine, based with golds, chromes and soft fabrics. These spaces are beautiful but usable simultaneously (Make sure its wine-resistant, because spilling on it IS punishable by death.) You enjoy this style because it is bright, possibly just as bright as your future. Better put on your sunglasses.

Our Kid’s Fridge Art

Okay guys. Why do you put your son’s and daughter’s art on the fridge? It could be a horribly disfigured horse and it would still be there! Then after, it may be forever remembered inside a cardboard box in the attic labeled “Art”. Why do we do this? Why did our parents do this for our art? You and I didn’t go off to become the next Van Gogh. (Thankfully because we like our ears.) We do this because its meaningful! It has a temporary place on the fridge with a magnet attached only to make room for the next masterpiece. They drew that horse to the absolute best of their ability, for YOU. It was created for your eyes and it came straight from the heart of the little one that you love so dearly. That’s really why its done isn’t it?

The funny thing is, why isn’t the rest of your house this way? The fridge becomes a small museum riddled with sheets of crayon-filled love, while your walls and shelves lack any of the personality and story that lies on them. But, it CAN.

And, instead of telling you how to make this happen for yourselves, we would rather tell you a story of our own.

These owls. They are ceramic and mass produced (but still cute.) The thing is, we take our social media VERY seriously, because it’s a chance to serve all of you, make you laugh and bring you some joy in this tough world. That is why we do any of this (we hope that shows). So long story short, we posted this picture on Instagram.

owls-ig.png

The response was amazing. So many people fell in love with them and it showed us that we can have fun and be of great service to you guys, which we are VERY proud of. It was the first time on social media that we had more orders on a product than they even had in stock, some people are still on a wait list. But anyway, we had to have a set of our own and they sit eye level just below the TV to remind us how many of you stand behind us and support us. It is incredibly humbling and we are so proud to do it all for you. (our photography has since improved)

Is any of this making sense?? Here let us break it down further, you all are like OUR kids in this scenario. We truly care for you, and your well-being and we just want the best for you (that’s why we carry the best😉) When you get excited about our products we have or say that we made your day, or a specific piece you got from us has actual meaning to you and your family, that pulls at our heart strings and there have definitely been tears shed multiple nights because of you. Our gratitude only grows daily because we wouldn’t be here without you. These owls are a reminder of that, and also how much you have impacted all of US here at the store. So from the deepest part of our hearts—thank you!

Serving you all, is some of the most meaningful things we have ever done. If that’s not art, we don’t know what is. Hang that art. Find those pieces that are actually meaningful to you, let it speak to you in a way no other thing has. Wait for them. Once you find them, you’ll know it. For us, the owls are perfect. Let us know what’s perfect for you.

What Happens In Vegas

What Happens in Vegas comes to Boise!

If you guys don’t remember, we went to Vegas this past January! We go every year for a furniture show *cough cough*. Anyway, now that we’ve cleared our throat, the trip is SO FUN! It’s different every time, we go there in an attempt to put our finger on the upcoming styles and trends. Because let’s face it, Boise is 2 years behind trends (at minimum). So, our objectives this past year was to search for new suppliers who carry high quality products at a great price we can pass on to all of you😊. After that, we hope to take in the new sights/styles/trends that are going to be the future of design! We want to be the forefront of trend in the Treasure Valley. Here are some pics from our adventure this past Vegas Furniture Show!

SEE!! Gold stuff everywhere

Its just as appealing to look at than it is to sit in;)

Vegas Furniture Show
it does look like a rolly-polly, yes.

Now, we want you to imagine the Boise Towne Square mall. And then stack it on itself 5 times. Then make that same building 3 times. That is about the size of the area we walk in the course of 2 and a half days! If you were wondering, our step count was phenomenal that weekend but has since plummeted☹

Theres so much to take in, its literally impossible to see it all

Is it frowned upon to lick the furniture that looks like ice cream?

Yes yes, we DID also do Vegas things! We went to a Beatles musical! That was a blast. It was a Cirque Du Soleil show with great music so that means our senses were going crazy! The sights, sounds and smells (don’t ask) were definitely something worth mentioning. We ate at buffets until we were far beyond full, but we justified it because of the aforementioned fact that our step count was off the charts. (Yes, we might mention our insane step count a few more times.) Aside from not eating at In-and-Out burger the trip was a blast! “Woo-ing” was kept to a minimum and bed times were mostly appropriate, all in all we wouldn’t do anything different! (Except for that In-and-Out Burger thing but there’s always next year.)

More realistic of us jumping for excitement when heading to Vegas;)

To sum it all up, let’s get back to the furniture. We found a GREAT supplier who is available to do custom products! Carrying them is a goal, however still in the works so keep an eye out😉. Styles that we saw are (surprisingly) more glass! Glass top tables weren’t an uncommon sight. Tables were a mix of metal and stone, whether that was gold and marble, or chrome and marble. Marble is coming back people! The rustic and industrial trends are still as alive as ever as well. That wasn’t surprising. We also saw a bunch of suppliers now carrying mid-century styled items from tables to sofas, so clearly that trend is at its peak!

The furniture world is funny, because when it comes to WHAT to supply, you need to ride the current wave, but also look ahead to the next wave coming. That’s the biggest reason we attend the show yearly, not JUST so we can brag about a high step count. We hope to bring home plenty of fresh ideas and furniture that will make you all say “WOW!” This past Vegas show was one for the books for sure, we are definitely looking forward to next year’s show, the only difference is that next year we are going to rent hoverboards, but still also probably eat the same amount at the buffets. Because Vegas😉

The Man, The Myth, The Mustache

Swede Schmidt

Swede Schmidt is the mastermind behind what is known as Mustache Flats Furniture. His building style collects barn woods and other reclaimed materials. He seems to put them in a blender and they get spit out as AMAZING dining tables, shelving, benches and an array of other furniture pieces. It then has the most durable finish known to man! Like seriously you could re-enter the atmosphere, crash land on a deserted island and survive. (It’s a theory we wouldn’t recommend trying, but it hasn’t been disproven either soo…)

Mustache Flats Furniture

Let’s take a step back. Swede is the physical embodiment of a Grizzly bear and his furniture perfectly reflects that. It’s extremely tough on the outside but is super cute and cuddly at the same time somehow. And don’t try to cuddle him in person…actually wait no. Try it and let us know what happens😉 Swede has been building furniture since his childhood, which we also can’t disprove. It wouldn’t surprise us however either because his builds are phenomenal. He creates a perfect bond between form and function, taking barn woods and somehow creating artistry and actual usability in it is no simple feat. He has spent his lifetime understanding human habits and creating pieces that hit your heart strings.

Black and White jill Swede

If you haven’t seen or tried any Mustache Flats furniture, we would HIGHLY recommend it. It’s aim is to push the limits on what we believe furniture can be. If you “don’t know you style” come see it in person. It can give you the feeling of a completed home. And isn’t that what life is really about?

Red Mustache Flats Table

His tables aren’t “just tables” they’re the items we eat on with the family at Thanksgiving and hold hands, reminiscing of the days before smart phones. Remembering staying out too late at your best friend’s house and running home because the sun was setting. His pieces are ones that out live and out last generations. They can be passed down from grandparents to grandkids taking every blemish from a family gathering along the way.

What Your Bedroom Says About You

Our bedroom styles say a lot about each of us, for better or for worse. They tell us things about our behavior, lifestyle and relationships between others and ourselves. Its really interesting to see how peoples design choices tell a behind-the-scenes that you don’t get a taste of from the outside world. Let’s do this!:)

Bright and Colorful!

Bright and colorful bedroom
Bright and Colorful Bedroom set

You take pride in your space! You’re probably a very inviting person and open with others. You are outgoing and appreciate those who do the same. You have a large circle of friends who you keep regular contact with. Okay popularrrr!;) Haha. Anyway, the bright colors you choose are a representation of your personality. Somewhat extravagant…your friends might say “way over the top”, but we would never say that because we’re nice. In this design, we LOVE the sculptural shapes. They keep things interesting, and isn’t that what life’s all about!? You dislike repetition and your space shows it. Bright and colorful bedroom people are ones who show off their space, and they have every right to!

Dark and Monochromatic!

DARK AND MONOCHROMATIC Bedroom
Dark and Monochromatic Bedroom

Doesn’t this look sooo cozy!? The dark bedroom people DO love their sleep! So much so they might actually be part bear or vampire (If vampire, please don’t eat us, or whatever.) These people are ones who are sensual. They prefer the quiet and peaceful over anything else, they believe the bedroom should reflect coziness and a sanctuary of sorts. Also, we are trying to not make any 50 Shades of Grey references her;) These spaces definitely make us want to throw on some Netflix and cuddle up by a fire. Okay now we’re kinda missing winter. Thanks a lot Dark and Monochromatic bedroom people!

Shiny and Glamorous!

Shiny and Glamorous Bedroom
Shiny and Glamorous bedroom

Ahh the shiny and glam! You are similar to the colorful people, but on top of that, you LOVE to follow trends. You are always in touch with the new fads and what people are doing, you’re extremely observant of the world around you. (Hence the mirrors going everywhere.) You should be an Instagram model, if you aren’t one already. Like really, you could get major followers. Anyway back to the bedroom talk. You find coziness in a different way than others, THIS is your heaven and your escape. It’s a very versatile space you maintain. It can be bright and shiny, or subdued and comfortable depending on your lighting choices. It can all change in a second depending on your mood, (NO NO we didn’t just call you mood-swingy…) These spaces can be a HUGE design risk, but that’s exactly who you are! This design is edgy and a perfect example of why you love it! It’s not subtle, but then again that’s the point😉

Wood-filled!

Wood Filled Bedroom
Wood-Filled Bedroom

You LOVE being outdoors and active! Your space is high-quality first. You appreciate the organic feel because it makes you feel connected, to your partner or even just yourself. You may live in the North-end in Boise, and that isn’t a knock on you at all we are actually realllyyyy jealous! You value things that last like; relationships, furniture, running shoes, Costco’s gigantic rolls of saran wrap. You are a family oriented person who spends your time outside of the bedroom and more in the living room. You probably just had an awesome Mother’s Day because the entire family had to do what you wanted and you picked brunch and a hike. The organic feeling these spaces give us is a deep connection, to the Earth but also to all those around us whom we love.

One that needs to be cleaned!

Messy Cute Bedroom
Cute Messy Bedroom

Okay now everyone else raise your hand!;) Yes, you are normal. Your room isn’t very clean most of the time and that’s alright! You’re super busy and active and how do you even clean a room when you could have wine instead. Its all about give and take in the world and your bedroom definitely is not in the “give” category. You should really consider putting that empty pizza box in the corner in the trash though. You DO love your room, but it’s not a giant priority. You would rather spend that time and money on your relationships. That says a lot of great things about you. You’re a realist who prioritizes things and actually sticks to them. You would rather spend time at a coffee shop or catching up with an old friend than working on your room. Right now we are encouraging you to neglect it! Its fine! Definitely give us a chance to work with you on your living room though…you like having people over and THAT’S where you would rather have awesome furniture!

We hope you get a kick out of reading along with us:)

Your Furniture Based on your Zodiac Sign

Our spaces reflect ourselves. They are just like the clothing we wear (NO MOM! This isn’t a phase, you don’t understand uggghh!) Anyway, the furniture and décor we have tell the world about ourselves.

Little did you know; your style matches Zodiac symbols! Its science or something. Find your sign below, how well does it match your personality?!:)

Gemini & Capricorn: The curious and innovative.
Mid-Century.

The mid-century style is PERFECT for you guys. Wow we are excited! In this era, the United States had begun innovations in the furniture and architecture world that still last today. You are intellectual and are often found in leadership roles, which is exactly what the mid-century era was all about. The pieces of furniture which existed before this time were either beautiful OR functional, but not often both. The people who designed the pieces we still see today rejected the current state of furniture, which is the same thing YOU would do Gemini and Capricorn! (Can we call you “Cap” for short? We’re all friends here.) These signs are a perfect match for the mid-century style because they are HIGHLY creative and detail oriented. They want the most out of life and realize that the only way to get there is to do it yourself and to be meticulous about it. The mid-century style is just as much about form as it is function, with bright pops of color so long as they are warranted. Gem and Cap appreciate these things because they fit seamlessly into our lives. They are drawn toward this style because it questioned what we knew before then, and attempted to improve it all. Gem and Cap are born leaders and achievers, just as the mid-century style propelled us toward the future of modern day design.

Virgo & Scorpio: The deep and combative.
Modern.

Wow, okay let’s not piss off any Scorpios here…tread lightly😉 The Virgo and Scorpio signs are VERY in their head, they appreciate well-thought designs and always question the world around them. They want improvement, which is the MODERN design! Keep following here. The modern design is VERY rebellious and rejects all thought to the past designs. It seeks statement pieces, and busting out of the norms. The last thing a Virgo or Scorpio wants is to be compared to others, the modern design is a style that seeks and screams individualism. It gives no credit to preceding designs, and form is sought more over function. A Virgo and Scorpio would rather have the RIGHT piece in their home, rather than the most comfortable. And you better believe, these pieces are a perfect reflection of themselves. Virgs and Scorps are VERY contemplative and over think at times (DO NOT GO THERE, SCORPIO IS GETTING MAD!) but that’s only because of a DEEP caring about every detail of a life they are trying to live. The modern style is the exact representation of these two signs, because it wishes to look forward rather than back, no matter how great the past may have been.

Aries & Libra: The courageous and balanced.
Industrial.

Okay hear us out on this one, Aries and Libra! You guys have CRAZY courage, right?! But you also know how to balance your time and energy. Well the Industrial design is a GREAT match for you! Often, we see Industrial designs mix wood and metals together and use a perfect amount of each of them (balance). Also, before the industrial style came about, WHO ON EARTH WOULD PUT METAL IN THEIR HOUSE!? Seriously, that was ludicrous before this style (courage). But Aries and Libras are courageous enough to think outside the box, and have the intelligence to only bring in so much of one material that it isn’t overwhelming. The Aries and Libra signs value challenges, but dislike too much. You gotta have a break sometimes right?! The difficulty in the Industrial design was how in the world do you make a table out of metal, but make it serene enough to be invited into someone’s home? That challenge was met by courage and balance. Aries and Libra are perfect matches for the Industrial style because it took an uncommon material, and turned it into something many of us currently live with and love! This style would never have been possible if it weren’t for an Aries and Libra mindset which is that, challenge is necessary for progress, but progress is only sustained as long as there is balance. So thank you Industrial style for being JUST LIKE our Aries and Libra people.

Taurus & Leo: The stable and loving.
Contemporary.

Taurus and Leo are the BEST people for contemporary design! You guys value stability and have a loving heart. You put others before yourselves out of care and humility (Taking notes over there, Scorpio?) The contemporary design is AMAZING! It has transitional attributes so it can bounce between different styles depending on the other things in the room. That is the epitome of what it means to be human. Contemporary design share versatility with those who are Taurus and Leos. You guys place high value on comfortability which is exactly what contemporary design does. It doesn’t boast or cause major waves, but when there is NO comfortability in a space, THAT is also something people notice. You mesh well with this design style because your highest desire is for stability and honest connection, and that something that each other style should learn from (ahem, Scorpios.)

Sagittarius & Pisces: The freedom-seekers and daydreamers
Rustic.

Listen to this Sag and Pisces (we are just gonna shorten some names especially because we misspell Sagittarius every time.) You enjoy freedom and always have your heads in the clouds, which is an awesome thing. The same reasons are exactly why the Rustic Style is perfect for you! When it comes to rustic design, it is often made entirely of wood and done by hand at a meticulous level for the sheer enjoyment of the craft. There is freedom in enjoying what you do and believing you serve a purpose larger than yourself, sounds a lot like you huh Sag and Pisces? Aspiring to be great is just how YOU are, and how the rustic design is. The rustic design is a celebration of wood and the planet that we live on. It was born in HOPES that YOU BECOME a tree-hugger! (Yes, its totally okay to actually hug your wood table, we won’t judge you because we do that all the time.) It is a great thing to yearn for travel and see all the beauty our planet holds, its also okay to take some of that home with you (please adhere to the laws of your region, we don’t condone theft.) Rustic is definitely one of our favorite styles because it is simple yet highly beautiful and effective, just how you are Sag and Pisces.
Cancer & Aquarius: The Family-Oriented and Generous.
Traditional.

Cancer and Aquarius, you guys are the peacemakers and what makes the world revolve. You place high value on traditions and family life, which is PRECISELY why the traditional style fits you! Your family comes first, and you’re very generous with the time you give. (How do we even describe this furniture when we are tearing up over here?!?) The traditional style furniture is the epitome of comfort. It is the sofas you take naps on cuddling by a fire. It is the furniture you huddle around at Thanksgiving. Cancer and Aquarius are drawn to this style because it’s a celebration of heritage and legacy, which is the meaning they give life. You put others first, before yourselves. (Text that Cancer/Aquarius in your life right now and tell them you love them.) Happiness and the emotional well-being is what makes the Traditional style so perfect a match here. It is the physical embodiment of what it means to really be a family and love one another. It’s not to say that Cancer and Aquarius don’t care about their furniture, its actually that they care about YOU more than it, so the items they choose are specifically chosen to accommodate the ones they love. The traditional style isn’t known as wild, and often times the furniture isn’t the most important thing in the room. And why would it be? YOU are the most important thing in the room to the Cancer and Aquarius.

We hope this was as fun for you as it was for us😊
Let us know what you think!

Tropical Salvage-Evolving Furniture

We have worked with Tropical Salvage for just under 3 years now. Every year their growth has shown us that they are doing all the right things. Their products are sourced from Indonesian hard woods and its all hand made there! Then they ship it to Portland then take it over to us in a 26 foot truck. (You would know all this if you watched us on Instagram and Facebook live last Wednesday;)) Oh and also they are a fair trade company. We want to share with you some of the shots we got of their visit!

Tropical Salvage Arrival
This truck is 26 feet long. Trust us, we were sore…

When they pull around the corner, its like seeing Santa arrive in his sleigh. We couldn’t wait to unwrap each present.

Teak Tree Root Bookcase
Tropical Salvage somehow managed to baffle us with this Teak Bookcase made out of a tree root!

We just plopped this down in the middle of the parking lot. Not sure the legalities of that but the cops never showed up so we assume its fine to do for ever and ever and ever…

Tropical Salvage Patio Set
PROUDLY, we are the first ones in North America to have this set.

If you were planning on never leaving your patio ever, this is a great place to start;)

Tropical Salvage Metal End Tables
These are benches or end tables or actually just whatever you need them to be. Like a life partner.

Its hard to work when you just want to stare at everything…the entire day.

Tropical Salvage fun
A picture of a picture being taken

The best thing, is watching people become inspired by their spaces. They envision it all, to create the proper space for them and their families.

Jill Monteith
Its really really tough to not smile and laugh when Tropical Salvage brings all their furniture

The rain that day made this all much more difficult. Conditions were less than ideal, but that didn’t stop us from having a GREAT time. Its a blessing to love what we do here.

Sula Console Table by Tropical Salvage
No we didnt spill wine on this…thats REAL wood.

In the end, we just want to say THANK YOU to Tropical Salvage. You have been an amazing addition to our store and we look forward to many years to come!:)

Thank you to each and every one of you who care to read our blogs, its our chance to speak directly to you, connect with you and reveal ourselves in ways most companies dont.

Until next time friends,

What makes a home design “GOOD”? (Mostly what NOT to do)

We all want to love our homes and the things we put in them. From the big sofas and rugs, to the family photos, to the elementary school art good enough to make the fridge. But where does a good home design come from?

It starts with you.
It isnt a rug or a piece of fun ceramic you found at our store, its is you.
(Sorry if you’re now intimidated, just keep reading.)

The thing about you is, youre unique. You arent your neighbor or your mother, but still thank her for the quirks she passed down to you. Your home should be as your family is–unique. There is no one proper way to create a home for yourself. The worst thing you could do is neglect the fact that your home can be a perfect reflection of the love you and your family share. Here is a short list of things to NOT do when creating your space at home.

  • DON’T COPY.
DO NOT copy a space you see. It won’t feel at all like yours, because it’s not! Those photos are staged, and likely created for a magazine or some quasi-famous Instagrammer who bought 20,000 followers. A better way to approach this is to BE INSPIRED by a photo you see. Take small aspects of it, such as the style and overall colors when it comes to the larger pieces. Let those items into your home, then add your own touch. Let them infiltrate and from there, you will be able to develop the proper space for yourself. You will be able to identify what actual needs you have when you are simply inspired by a design style that speaks to you.
  • DON’T RUSH.
Creating the proper space takes time. If you buy it all at once, you don’t get to experience the joy of finding the piece you were searching for (We hope that quirk your mom passed down was patience.) Yes, sometimes in some situations it’s okay to furnish an entire room worth in a sitting, but honestly that’s a rarity. We hope you never feel pressure to buy, because that’s when rash decisions get made. Queue buyer’s remorse. Trust us, be patient. The right things will present themselves when you need them. We really want to relate this to dating but that’s becoming a regular theme haha! Patience is a solid tool you can use and wait for a special piece to present itself, not to mention we may be able to have a piece custom built for you😊. Too bad dating doesn’t work that same way.
  • DON’T UNDER UTILIZE
Lately, we have been seeing a lot of minimal designs, which are AMAZING! And for some people they can work, and it’s just enough for what they need, and that is totally great. HOWEVER, you need to consider the fact that you are actually going to live here…sooo that’s important to realize. Adding an extra lamp may look less “magazine worthy”, but if your favorite thing to do at night is to read Samantha King poetry in your favorite chair, then so be it, add the lamp. Or if you realize you don’t need something, consign it. Use what you need and nothing more. (WOW, we are called The Recycled Room. It shouldn’t surprise you to know we aren’t for over-consumption.) There are plenty of used and refurbished furniture items we have here in Boise that can work for you. And seriously, Samantha King is amazing, so definitely buy the lamp.
  • DON’T LISTEN.
Yes, we just told you to NOT listen. Husbands reading this should be rejoicing right now…
We DON’T want you to listen to the articles that say “Every home needs (this item)” or “Every design should (have this)”. No. They are plain wrong. Your home needs nothing but your love and care stashed in every corner and inside every hanging family photo. That is what your space needs. Our spaces are a reflection of ourselves and our lives, and our relationships are the most important things we have. The only thing your space NEEDS is you. If you need some guidance or assistance we are always there for that, but all you have to do is identify your need and find the items that will satisfy it. Maybe it’s a sofa in the exact color you’ve been hoping to find, or maybe it’s a picture frame that complements your husbands tie on your wedding day. There’s no wrong answer when you put a little effort into the design you are aiming for. Articles are wrong for telling you “this is what you lack”, “this is what you need”. Your space need more you. Nothing more.

Overall, our hope is that you’re unafraid. Don’t be afraid to mix and match items in different styles, don’t be afraid to add tons of color, don’t be afraid to splurge on that ONE thing in your home that makes you giddy to caress with your hand as you walk down the hall. That’s what life is about, happiness. If it makes you happy, do it, get it. Its funny to think, the only thing your space has been missing this whole time, is just more you. Take charge of your space and be fearless. Don’t copy, don’t rush, don’t listen. Be you, and it will be perfect.

Pickin Boise!

This is our second year attending Pickin’ Boise! (cause its the second year it has existed! Haha) It is a local show at the fairgrounds that features artisan craftsmen as well as antique furniture, pretty much anything that’s super awesome and unique will be there. Hence why WE’RE going:)

THE GOOD:
Last year we brought A TON of stuff! From big to small, colorful to colorless, light to heavy. And heavy again, and heavy one more time. It was an absolute blast! The feel is SO much different than we are used to. We are accustomed to having people walk into our retail location, people who have looked for us and made a conscious decision to come in. At the show, its a competition for attention. Just because someone is relatively near your booth doesn’t mean they’re interested. Its kind of like dating, just because a person makes eye contact with you doesn’t mean they’re interested. But its fine, they probably don’t appreciate pizza and wine as much as you do and you don’t need that in your life.—

We digress. Anyway the show is WILD. There is a hoard of people, all looking for that next unique thing they didn’t know they needed to complete their spaces, and we love being a part of that. Because we truly believe we have some of the coolest and most unique pieces out there, and we stand behind our products 100%. At the show last year, we partnered with Mustache Flats who many of you surely know (visit our “Our Friends” Tab if you don’t) He will also be in attendance with us! We couldn’t be more excited:) Swede, the builder, is a man’s man, standing about 6 foot 9 but has a personality bigger than that, don’t ask us how, just come meet him. His beard is something pulled straight out of the movie “Tombstone” and a bear would be jealous of the paws on this guy. Truly, this man is an artist and having him as one of our largest suppliers means the world to us<3

THE BAD:
Last year we brought like 14 tables, each one weighing about as much as the car in your garage. And we carried each one the length of a football field. (Maybe a Pee-wee league football field but it still counts.) Yeah so we definitely aren’t doing that again. There isn’t enough coffee on this planet to give us the energy to move that many, maybe we just need to change our diet but stop your judging RIGHT NOW. We haven’t decided EXACTLY what pieces to bring, but rest assured, weight will be a criteria;) We have a TON of really cool items we are excited to show you all! The fact that we have amazing consignors who trust us is exactly why we do this. Our purpose is to serve them and our customers, and this is an amazing opportunity to get our name out there at the same time!  So thank you to each of you, our attempt to give all of you the best service we can is our highest goal.

WHAT DOES THIS PICKIN BOISE LOOK LIKE FOR US:
We’ll just come and find out!;) Haha but really, we haven’t completely decided yet, BUT we will have tables (The heavy ones, thanks Tropical Salvage), signs– Idaho ones, metal ones, funny ones. Radios to blast music as loud as they’ll let us, and PLENTY of super unique finds that ONLY We have. The truth is, we haven’t figured out every detail. But we will soon, sometimes the best ideas come from a thought 5 minutes prior. We have learned that having fun is the most important thing, and figuring out every single small detail sometimes isn’t worth the stress. A lot of you say this in the store, “I’ll know it when I see it.” And this will be a similar approach for us. What we DO know is that this is going to be extremely fun, its $7 for both days and we really hope to see you all there:)

Interior Design Tips and 4 Best Practices

Congratulations! You bought a new house or decided to change things up a bit:)
Umm okay…now what??
NOW comes the design! (Some of you may dread it, but that’s why we’re here!)

Designing the interior of your home WILL be a challenge. There will be times when a spot needs something, but you have no idea what that is. Other times, something you have wont fit. There’s plenty of issues to take care of, so lets begin!

1) Start With a Blank Room

Okay so honestly, none of these are hard and fast rules. We get it, your Grandma had a BEAUTIFUL end table you HAVE to use–and that’s great! Use it. BUT don’t be afraid of getting rid of items you don’t really care about. In fact, get rid of most of it. (Oh hey there we actually do consignment!) Shooing your old furniture and decor out the door is likely going to be the key to success in your new/fresh space. The next step, is to get ONE item you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT! This is designed to be the anchoring piece of your room. It may be a piece of art, a sofa or your grandma’s aforementioned end table. From this, you’ll be able to better envision the room and the direction it needs to go!

2) Be Fearless

Now, we need you to channel your inner Beyonce. You don’t need no man, and you also don’t need no one telling you you can’t add color! You can have a man, thats not what we’re saying, but you SHOULD use color! It can be pops of small warm/cool colors OR you can go crazy with it! (As they did in our top photo). When in doubt go crazy. The above photo shows just about every color in the rainbow, yet it all comes together in a beautiful symphony. Just like Beyonces music. Make sure you get matching colors and disperse them evenly throughout the space. Notice the drapes have the same yellow as the chairs, this is NOT by accident!

If you want to go to the less crazy side, adding pops of color here and there, the rest of your palette needs to remain pretty neutral, we would recommend different shades of grey for obvious reasons. And as before, disperse the colors evenly throughout your space. This will give it a VERY full effect when it comes to color.

3) It Has to Mix

Think about cookies. Well, think about BAKING cookies. Your recipe for the perfect cookie is all of these mixable ingredients. You have Eggs, Sugar, Flour etc. and combined they make an incredible treat that only insane people can’t appreciate. Now, envision your room as the cookie–the final product. Each item you include, HAS to mix well with the other items. Otherwise, it would be like trying to put a brick in a washing machine, that just wont work. Pillows and rugs are the best ways to spice up some color in your space. The best part is that they can be easily changed when you have a new favorite color;) Use complimentary colors in any art or throw pillows you wish to add. Just keep in mind, blend it for the best results.

On that same token, mix old items with new ones! It will give you a great eclectic feel. Don’t be afraid to mix materials either. Right now, a TON of people are using woods and metals and they look phenomenal!

4) HAVE FUN!

Oh sorry…we didn’t mean to yell that, but its important! Have fun and fill your space with things you love. Whether or not it comes out COMPLETELY perfectly wont matter. Kinda like your spouse or significant other. That person is probably nowhere near perfect (insert concerns in the comments section) but you STILL love them:) Your space is that same way. As long as YOU love it and make it a space you can enjoy with others, that’s all that really matters. Our biggest recommendation for you, is to put on some music, shake your booty and stop caring what the world thinks of your space. Care about what YOU and YOUR LOVED ONES think of your space, because THEY are your world.

Until next time friends.
