We all want to love our homes and the things we put in them. From the big sofas and rugs, to the family photos, to the elementary school art good enough to make the fridge. But where does a good home design come from?
It starts with you.
It isnt a rug or a piece of fun ceramic you found at our store, its is you.
(Sorry if you’re now intimidated, just keep reading.)
The thing about you is, youre unique. You arent your neighbor or your mother, but still thank her for the quirks she passed down to you. Your home should be as your family is–unique. There is no one proper way to create a home for yourself. The worst thing you could do is neglect the fact that your home can be a perfect reflection of the love you and your family share. Here is a short list of things to NOT do when creating your space at home.
- DON’T COPY.
DO NOT copy a space you see. It won’t feel at all like yours, because it’s not! Those photos are staged, and likely created for a magazine or some quasi-famous Instagrammer who bought 20,000 followers. A better way to approach this is to BE INSPIRED by a photo you see. Take small aspects of it, such as the style and overall colors when it comes to the larger pieces. Let those items into your home, then add your own touch. Let them infiltrate and from there, you will be able to develop the proper space for yourself. You will be able to identify what actual needs you have when you are simply inspired by a design style that speaks to you.
- DON’T RUSH.
Creating the proper space takes time. If you buy it all at once, you don’t get to experience the joy of finding the piece you were searching for (We hope that quirk your mom passed down was patience.) Yes, sometimes in some situations it’s okay to furnish an entire room worth in a sitting, but honestly that’s a rarity. We hope you never feel pressure to buy, because that’s when rash decisions get made. Queue buyer’s remorse. Trust us, be patient. The right things will present themselves when you need them. We really want to relate this to dating but that’s becoming a regular theme haha! Patience is a solid tool you can use and wait for a special piece to present itself, not to mention we may be able to have a piece custom built for you😊. Too bad dating doesn’t work that same way.
- DON’T UNDER UTILIZE
Lately, we have been seeing a lot of minimal designs, which are AMAZING! And for some people they can work, and it’s just enough for what they need, and that is totally great. HOWEVER, you need to consider the fact that you are actually going to live here…sooo that’s important to realize. Adding an extra lamp may look less “magazine worthy”, but if your favorite thing to do at night is to read Samantha King poetry in your favorite chair, then so be it, add the lamp. Or if you realize you don’t need something, consign it. Use what you need and nothing more. (WOW, we are called The Recycled Room. It shouldn’t surprise you to know we aren’t for over-consumption.) There are plenty of used and refurbished furniture items we have here in Boise that can work for you. And seriously, Samantha King is amazing, so definitely buy the lamp.
- DON’T LISTEN.
Yes, we just told you to NOT listen. Husbands reading this should be rejoicing right now…
We DON’T want you to listen to the articles that say “Every home needs (this item)” or “Every design should (have this)”. No. They are plain wrong. Your home needs nothing but your love and care stashed in every corner and inside every hanging family photo. That is what your space needs. Our spaces are a reflection of ourselves and our lives, and our relationships are the most important things we have. The only thing your space NEEDS is you. If you need some guidance or assistance we are always there for that, but all you have to do is identify your need and find the items that will satisfy it. Maybe it’s a sofa in the exact color you’ve been hoping to find, or maybe it’s a picture frame that complements your husbands tie on your wedding day. There’s no wrong answer when you put a little effort into the design you are aiming for. Articles are wrong for telling you “this is what you lack”, “this is what you need”. Your space need more you. Nothing more.
Overall, our hope is that you’re unafraid. Don’t be afraid to mix and match items in different styles, don’t be afraid to add tons of color, don’t be afraid to splurge on that ONE thing in your home that makes you giddy to caress with your hand as you walk down the hall. That’s what life is about, happiness. If it makes you happy, do it, get it. Its funny to think, the only thing your space has been missing this whole time, is just more you. Take charge of your space and be fearless. Don’t copy, don’t rush, don’t listen. Be you, and it will be perfect.
Until next time friends
