Interior Design Tips and 4 Best Practices

Congratulations! You bought a new house or decided to change things up a bit:)
Umm okay…now what??
NOW comes the design! (Some of you may dread it, but that’s why we’re here!)

Designing the interior of your home WILL be a challenge. There will be times when a spot needs something, but you have no idea what that is. Other times, something you have wont fit. There’s plenty of issues to take care of, so lets begin!

1) Start With a Blank Room

Okay so honestly, none of these are hard and fast rules. We get it, your Grandma had a BEAUTIFUL end table you HAVE to use–and that’s great! Use it. BUT don’t be afraid of getting rid of items you don’t really care about. In fact, get rid of most of it. (Oh hey there we actually do consignment!) Shooing your old furniture and decor out the door is likely going to be the key to success in your new/fresh space. The next step, is to get ONE item you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT! This is designed to be the anchoring piece of your room. It may be a piece of art, a sofa or your grandma’s aforementioned end table. From this, you’ll be able to better envision the room and the direction it needs to go!

2) Be Fearless

Now, we need you to channel your inner Beyonce. You don’t need no man, and you also don’t need no one telling you you can’t add color! You can have a man, thats not what we’re saying, but you SHOULD use color! It can be pops of small warm/cool colors OR you can go crazy with it! (As they did in our top photo). When in doubt go crazy. The above photo shows just about every color in the rainbow, yet it all comes together in a beautiful symphony. Just like Beyonces music. Make sure you get matching colors and disperse them evenly throughout the space. Notice the drapes have the same yellow as the chairs, this is NOT by accident!

If you want to go to the less crazy side, adding pops of color here and there, the rest of your palette needs to remain pretty neutral, we would recommend different shades of grey for obvious reasons. And as before, disperse the colors evenly throughout your space. This will give it a VERY full effect when it comes to color.

3) It Has to Mix

Think about cookies. Well, think about BAKING cookies. Your recipe for the perfect cookie is all of these mixable ingredients. You have Eggs, Sugar, Flour etc. and combined they make an incredible treat that only insane people can’t appreciate. Now, envision your room as the cookie–the final product. Each item you include, HAS to mix well with the other items. Otherwise, it would be like trying to put a brick in a washing machine, that just wont work. Pillows and rugs are the best ways to spice up some color in your space. The best part is that they can be easily changed when you have a new favorite color;) Use complimentary colors in any art or throw pillows you wish to add. Just keep in mind, blend it for the best results.

On that same token, mix old items with new ones! It will give you a great eclectic feel. Don’t be afraid to mix materials either. Right now, a TON of people are using woods and metals and they look phenomenal!

4) HAVE FUN!

Oh sorry…we didn’t mean to yell that, but its important! Have fun and fill your space with things you love. Whether or not it comes out COMPLETELY perfectly wont matter. Kinda like your spouse or significant other. That person is probably nowhere near perfect (insert concerns in the comments section) but you STILL love them:) Your space is that same way. As long as YOU love it and make it a space you can enjoy with others, that’s all that really matters. Our biggest recommendation for you, is to put on some music, shake your booty and stop caring what the world thinks of your space. Care about what YOU and YOUR LOVED ONES think of your space, because THEY are your world.

Until next time friends.
